Week 7 - RJEA and Piece Maker Logos

RJEA Logo 1
 RJEA Logo 2

 Piece Maker Logo 1
Piece Maker Logo 2

Craft: To create these four logos I used a variety of tools, but once again the pen tool was the most prevalent one. Aside from using the pen tool I also used both selection tools to move objects and specific paths and anchor points around. I did need to create certain shapes like circles and rounded rectangles for these logos, so I used the eclipse and rounded rectangle tools. Another key tool that I used was the type tool to create the words.

Composition and Concept:

RJEA Logo 1: The concept behind this logo was simple, I wanted to give a simple logo type look. I was trying to play it safe for my first logo, nothing too fancy. I decided to design this logo within a circle. Then I created another circle within that circle so that I would be able to have a black thick black outline. This is something that I really like doing because it makes the logo itself standout. I then create a smaller circle within. The I used the pen tool to create the box inside the circle. I had a bit of trouble with this because I had to make the box align properly with the circle in order to not have problems with a little space showing a different color. For the words I used a different font for the RJAE in the middle because I wanted it to stand out from the rest. For the words that go around the circle I struggled a bit to find how to arc them but I ended up find it. I also had to rotate two of them also used the transform tool for that.

RJEA Logo 2: For this logo I wanted to give it a completely different look. No longer in a circle and with the main letters, RJEA, running in a different direction which is why I decided to do them diagonally. I wanted those letters to be the first thing to grab the attention, so that's why I ran it across the logo. I had a bit of trouble doing this so I decided to just place them individually. To create this logo I used the rounded rectangle tool in order to create a black border. I used the rounded rectangle tool to create the outside square and in which I would put the words around. I then created the second square within with the same tool in order to create a border where I would put those words. I used different fonts to create a distinction between the outside words and RJEA.

Piece Maker Logo 1: For the Piece Maker logo I wanted a simplistic look. I started by using the rounded rectangle tool to create one rectangle and I created a second one within. I the wanted to create something that would somewhat resemble the actually piece maker, with a focus on the blade. So I created those shapes that surround "piece maker" and I did it with the pen tool. Since I wanted the word and the shapes to stand out I made them white with a dark blue background to create a good contrast.

Piece Maker Logo 2: I also started this logo off by using the rounded rectangle tool and I created the same shapes around "piece maker". One of the differences is the font. I used a sawblade font on the first letter of each word to give it more of that blade look. For this logo I also decided to a border that looked like a blade and I created it by using the pen tool. I did have issues getting the whole border to be exactly the same, but I does not look bad at all. The only issues that I later found with this is that the border draws attention from the actual name, so that is something I would change.

Week 6 Logos

Modifications of Pringles Logo

Copy of Original Falcons Logo

3 Modifications of Falcons Logo
Craft: When modifying these logos I wanted to make them simple and more modern. To create the three logos that I chose above, I mainly used the pen tool and direct selection tool, and layers. The Pringles logo and Falcon's logo did require me to use the eclipse tool to make the circles and ovals. I also used the color picker tool to see which color combinations went best together.
Composition and Concept: The second logo that I redesigned for Chicago Fire was probably the hardest one. I was trying to make it look like an actual soccer team logo. I you were to look to logo without knowing it actually belonged to a soccer team, you would have no idea it did. I started off by tracing a drawing a regular soccer crest with the pen. Then I created the space in which I put the name Fire. I had a bit of trouble aligning the top and bottom of this shape but it worked out. I then took images of Chicago flag along with a soccer ball and traced them within the logo. Then I noticed that the logo wasn't standing out from the white space so I drew a red border for it. As far as colors I tried to stay with the colors that Chicago Fire is associated with. To put the finshing touch I put a star at the top of the logo to represent the championship that they won. This is something that is very common in soccer logos.
For the second variation of the Pringles logo I was trying to do it as some and modern as possible. The original logo seems a bit outdated to me. I started off by keeping the head. It is something that many would associate the brand with. I did keep the eyes and mustache but I got rid of the hair and bowtie. I also decided to give it the color of a Pringles chip. As for the letters I felt it needed more modern ones. I decided to use the ones I had created in week 3. Once I put the letters in place, I gave them a black border. In order to make them stand out more, I made the letters white. I think this would help the viewer notice the name more. This simple contrast really helps the name stand out. Overall I think I achieved my goal of making it more simple and modern.
The third modification of the Falcon's logo had the same concept...make it simpler and more modern. I chose to do this modication as a circular logo, so with the use of the eclipse tool. I created two circles. The outer one would become a black border. Afterwards I was having trouble deciding how to design the inside. I then place the image of the original logo under the circles using the layers tool and I traced the logo onto it. I decided to trace the first half because otherwise it would just be the same logo inside of a circle. After I finished tracing it I selcted it and rotated it a little bit which ended up making me modify the points in order the make the trace fit in the circle. Once I was done with that, I began playing with color combinations with the main ones always being black and red. When I came upon this one I really liked it because it looked cool and modern. I tried incorporating grey and white which are colors that are used in the original logo but I could not find where to actually put them. The simple red and black worked well and helped me achieve my goal of giving it a more modern look.

Week 4 Letters Drawings

  • Craft : To create these letters I used the pen tool to make all the lines. I did help myself by turning on the rulers and guides which ultimately helped create the straighter lines and they also helped me when trying to give the letters a similar weight. I used the ruler for the most part to measure half an inch of weight for the letters. The curved letters, which I made by dragging the pen tool to create curved lines, were harder to give the same exact half inch weight. For the most part the letters have a least similar weight, but the have the same baseline and ascender line.
  • Composition: For the letters I just wanted the viewer to see a similar set of letters. I didn't want the viewer to see many different weights and heights since they are all supposed to be the same.
  • Concept: The letters should make the audience feel new, young, innovative. We see more and more of these sharp and clean letters being used, which give and cleaner, more modern look.

Week 5 Letter Drawings

To create these letters I mainly used the direct selection tool. I started off by working on the straight letters first and began by selecting an anchor point and dragged it over to the anchor point right next to it. I felt like this gave the letters a cool new edgy look. The curved letters were a bit harder to do, so I had to use the same tool to move the path's a bit, but they did have a resemblance of the straight letters. Once I was done modifying the paths I needed to change the color. This time I wanted to experiment a bit, so even though I kept the same blue color, I decided to use a gradient for these letters. It was a bit hard to figure out at first but once I did it looked good and this is what I ended up with.
